EM-62prose procedure

Inspection (Cont'd)

Connecting rod bearing grade selection

  1. 8
If bearing, crankshaft or connecting rod is replaced with a new one, select connecting rod bearing according to the following table.
Connecting rod bearing grade number: Grade numbers are punched in either Arabic or Roman numerals.
Crankshaft showing the crank pin grade number punched on a crank web. Callouts: 'Crank pin grade number', 'No. 4', 'No. 1'. Stamped digits visible.
    SEM437C

Method B (Using plastigage)

Connecting Rod Bushing Clearance (Small end)

  1. 1
Measure inner diameter "C" of bushing.
A bore gauge / dial gauge measuring the inner diameter 'C' of the connecting rod small-end bushing held by hand.
    SEM151B
  2. 2
Measure outer diameter "Dp" of piston pin.
A micrometer measuring the outer diameter 'Dp' of a piston pin held by hand. Label: 'Micrometer'.
    SEM903A
  3. 3
Calculate connecting rod bushing clearance. If it exceeds the limit, replace connecting rod assembly or connecting rod bushing and/or piston pin.
Connecting rod bushing clearance = C - Dp, Standard(0.0002 - 0.0007 in)
0.005 - 0.017mm
Limit(0.0009 in)
0.023mm

Replacement of Connecting Rod Bushing (Small end)

  1. 1
Drive in small end bushing until it is flush with end surface of rod.
Be sure to align the oil holes.
A press driving a small-end bushing into a connecting rod. A downward arrow indicates press direction. Label: 'Align' pointing to oil hole alignment.
    SEM062A
  2. 2
After driving in small end bushing, ream the bushing so that clearance between connecting rod busing and piston pin achieves specified value.
Clearance between connecting rod bushing and piston pin(0.0002 - 0.0007 in)
0.005 - 0.017mm
