Cylinder Block Distortion and Wear

    Clean upper face of cylinder block and measure the distortion.
    A straightedge laid across the upper face of the cylinder block with a feeler gauge being inserted underneath to measure distortion. Labels: 'Feeler gauge', 'Straightedge'.

    If out of specification, resurface it. The resurfacing limit is determined by cylinder head resurfacing in engine.
    Amount of cylinder head resurfacing is "A".
    Amount of cylinder block resurfacing is "B".

    If necessary, replace cylinder block.

Piston-to-Bore Clearance

    Using a bore gauge, measure cylinder bore for wear, out-of-round and taper.
    A bore gauge measuring cylinder bore. A diagram on the right shows measurement points for out-of-round (X-Y) and taper (A-B) at depths 20 (0.79), 60 (2.36) and 100 (3.94) mm from top of bore. Units: mm (in).

    Check for scratches and seizure. If seizure is found, hone it.
    If both cylinder block and piston are replaced with new ones, select piston of the same grade number punched on cylinder block lower surface.
