Cylinder Block - Inspection (Cont'd)

EM-59prose procedure

Inspection (Cont'd)

Crankshaft (Cont'd)

  1. 3
    Measure crankshaft runout.
Crankshaft supported on V-blocks with a dial indicator measuring runout at a center main journal. Arrows indicate rotation of the crankshaft.
    SEM346D
Runout (Total indicator reading)(0.0020 in)
Less than 0.05mm

BEARING CLEARANCE

Either of the following two methods may be used, however, method "A" gives more reliable results and is preferable.

Method A (Using bore gauge & micrometer)

Main bearing

Main bearing (Method A)

  1. 1
Set main bearings in their proper positions on cylinder block and main bearing cap.
Exploded layout of main bearing shells (upper and lower) for No. 1 through No. 5 bearings. Callouts: 'Upper bearing', 'Oil hole', 'Thrust bearing (only upper)', 'No. 5 bearing', 'Lower bearing', 'Identification color', 'Oil groove', 'No. 1 bearing', 'Front' arrow.
    SEM195C
  2. 2
Install main bearing cap to cylinder block.
Tighten all bolts in correct order in two or three stages.
A bore gauge measuring the inner diameter of a main bearing installed in the cylinder block with main bearing caps in place. Label: 'Bore gauge'.
    SEM286C
  3. 3
Measure inner diameter "A" of each main bearing.
  4. 4
Measure outer diameter "Dm" of each main journal in crankshaft.
A micrometer measuring the outer diameter 'Dm' of a crankshaft main journal.
    SEM506A
  5. 5
    Calculate main bearing clearance.
  6. 6
If it exceeds the limit, replace bearing.
Main bearing clearance = A - Dm, Standard(0.0007 - 0.0017 in)
0.018 - 0.042mm
Limit(0.004 in)
0.1mm
